Installation Problems

p2msp normally installs automatically without any problems, however we have found that the issues below occasionally arise. If you are having problems installing p2msp please read on...

Administrator Privileges - errors running Setup.exe.

If the installation fails with an error similar to that shown below, you will need to obtain administrator privileges in order to install p2msp. Please note that p2msp will only run on the account under which it is installed, so it is advisable to grant temporary administrator privileges to your user account in order to perform the installation. If you install p2msp using an Administrator account, you will have to be logged on as the Administrator in order to use p2msp thereafter.

Windows XP Tablet Edition.

We have found that installing p2msp on a tablet PC running Windows XP Tablet Edition can also cause the above error message to be displayed, even when the account running the installation has administrator privileges. The solution in this case is to start Windows in Safe mode (by pressing F8 on restarting the PC), and run the setup.exe whilst Windows is running in Safe mode.

Successful Installation Check.

The p2msp download file (p2msp.zip) contains just one file, setup.exe. When you run this program, you will be guided through the installation steps, and p2msp will be installed on your PC.

Once the setup program has completed successfully, the next time you start Microsoft Project you should see a reminder message as below;

Click on OK, and MS-Project should now include the p2msp toolbar as shown below;

The p2msp toolbar should now be operational, clicking any button should start the appropriate p2msp function. If the reminder window is not displayed, or the toolbar is missing or does not function, then please check the items below to fix the problem.

Disabled Items.

If you are using MS-Project 2002 or later, p2msp may have been disabled for some reason. To check this;

  1. Click on "Help" then "About Microsoft Project" in the MS-Project menu
  2. Click on the "Disabled Items" button on the About Microsoft Project form
  3. If p2msp appears in the list of disabled items, re-enable it. The p2msp reminder window should then be displayed as shown above.

COM Add-In not enabled.

It may be that p2msp has not been added to the list of COM Add-Ins for some reason. To check this;

  1. Click on "Tools" then "COM Add-Ins" on the MS-Project menu (If there is no menu entry for "COM Add-Ins" you will first need to add this entry as described further below)
  2. The COM Add-Ins dialogue will the be displayed, and p2msp should appear in the list with a tick mark to indicate it is installed.
  3. If p2msp does not appear in the list of available add-ins, you will need to add it;
    • Click on the "Add.." button to open the Add Add-In dialogue
    • Use the "Look In:" pick list to navigate to your C:\Program Files\p2msp folder.
    • Select the "p2msp.dll" file, then click OK to add it - the reminder message should be displayed and p2msp should now appear in the list of installed Add-Ins, with a tick mark against it.
    • Click on OK to close the COM Add-Ins dialogue.
  4. If p2msp appears in the list of Add-Ins, but without a tick mark
    • Click on the checkbox to add it
    • The reminder message should be displayed and p2msp should now appear in the list of installed Add-Ins, with a tick mark against it.
    • Click on OK to close the COM Add-Ins dialogue.

To add "COM Add-Ins" to the MS-Project Tools menu.

"COM Add-Ins" is a Microsoft Project menu item that is not installed by default. To add it to your MS-Project menu;

  1. Right-click in the MS-Project Toolbar area. This will open a pop-up menu of available toolbars
  2. Select the "Customize..." option at the bottom of the pop-up menu - the Customize dialogue will then be displayed
  3. Select the "Commands" tab, then click on "Tools" in the left side "Categories:" list.
  4. Scroll down the right side "Commands:" list until you locate the "COM Add-Ins" entry
  5. From here you can click and drag the "COM Add-Ins" item onto the MS-Project menu bar by clicking down then holding down the mouse button whilst moving the mouse. Drag this item over the MS-Project "Tools" menu, and the sub-menu will be displayed. You can then drag the item to any position in the sub-menu, and drop it there by releasing the mouse button.
  6. Click on Close to close the "Customize dialogue. The "COM Add-Ins" entry should now appear on the "Tools" sub-menu.
